The village Mastichari is situated on the northern coast of the island, about
22 km from Kos town to the west of the island and not far from Marmari and also
the airport.
It is a former fishing village which has now become one of the popular tourist
destinations of Kos, although the resorts on this northern coast are less
developed and less monopolized by tour operators. Mastichari, offers a beautiful
white sandy beach with turquoise waters that resemble distant exotic locations,
which make it for some the most beautiful beach in Kos. The beach is well
organized, with various water sports such as windsurfing and is blessed by a
continuous sea breeze. From the village one can enjoy beautiful sunsets, perhaps
the most beautiful of the island.
In addition to the calm and tranquillity of the village, Mastichari has a
reputation for extremely good fish tavernas serving only freshly caught fish. A
few metres from the beach you will find some of the best. Mastichari is also an
important tourist port with ferries and hydrofoils arriving and departing
several times a day to Kalymnos and Pserimos.
For something different a visit to the very popular and famous Lido Waterpark
Mastichari is a must. Covering an area of 75,000 square meters it is one of the
largest water parks in Greece. Inside the Aquatic Park there are a large variety
of slides, water games, Jacuzzi and whirlpools, swimming pools. Facilities are
also available for beach volleyball and beach tennis, trampolines and service
facilities such as restaurants, snack bars, first aid, changing rooms and a
mini-market . Lifeguards are trained specially prepared to ensure the safety of
visitors in swimming pools and water slides. The water in each pool is filtered
and renewed every day, making the plant one of the most modern in Europe.
A visit to the Lido Waterpark
A visit to the remains of the splendid 5th century Christian basilica, Agios
Ioannis. This is located on the border west of the beach and has some amazing
mosaic floors.
A visit to the small and isolated beach of Tourlos, located 1km east of
Mastichari and reached via a rugged trail.
Nightlife in Mastichari is not as lively and noisy as that in Kos Town but you
will find a good selection of bars and cafes that stay open until the small
hours. Examples are the Acid Jazz Cafe and the Number One.
